Compact and lightweight-an outstanding walk-around lens-Canon's EF 50 mm f/1.8 STM is a great entry into the world of EOS prime lenses. With an 80 mm effective focal-length on APS-C cameras, 50 mm on full-frame cameras, it's an excellent prime lens for portraits, action, even nighttime photography. Its bright maximum aperture of f/1.8 helps it not only to excel in low light, but also to capture gorgeous, sharp images and movies with beautiful background blur thanks to its circular 7-blade design. An updated lens arrangement with new lens coatings helps render images with excellent color balance, plus minimized ghosting and flare. Performance is brilliant, with a stepping motor (gear-type STM) to deliver near silent, continuous Movie Servo AF for movies plus speedy, smooth AF for stills. A redesigned exterior with improved focus ring placement makes manual focus adjustments a breeze. Canon's most compact 50 mm lens, the EF 50 mm f/1.8 STM has a rugged metal mount, plus an improved minimum focusing distance of 1.15 ft. (0.35m) and a maximum magnification of 0.21x. Offering sharp performance for the best in movies and stills, it's a fixed focal length gem-the perfect lens for photographers and moviemakers to expand the creative possibilities with their EOS cameras.

Rated 5 out of 5 byVernonEL from Great IQ. Incredible Value. Mediocre Focusing.Canon's latest Nifty Fifty does not disappoint. The EF 50mm f/1.8 STM should be in everyone amateur photographer's bag. This was the least expensive lens I've purchased, yet I always reach for it when high image quality and good bokeh is what I'm seeking. I'm incredibly happy with this lens when used for portraits, and when low lighting is a challenge. I believe this was Canon's third prime lens with the newer STM focusing system, so I would have expected that the 40mm and then the 24mm 2.8 pancake lens would have been a good way to learn how to do quick focusing. I do find that my older STM lenses, such as the 24mm f2.8 STM (not the 40mm f/2.8 STM which seems clunkier), and the two kit lenses released in 2013 (18-55 STM and 55-250 STM) and the 10-18 STM are all quicker and quieter at focusing than the STM Nifty Fifty. Furthermore, and perhaps I'm just spoiled, but the two (at this time) lenses using nano USM are even quicker (focusing) than the STM lenses and substantially quieter than the 50mm. It is also not built quite as well as most of the recent EF-S lenses, but I'm not docking it for that. The imaging elements on the inside are still stellar, so who really cares how robust it "feels"?This 50mm at 1.8 is an incredible value for the clarity and maximum aperture it offers. I do use it frequently. I just don't prefer it for video. The volume of the sound made when focusing isn't the deal breaker for me since I use a shotgun or lavlier mic, but the searching for focus, which is admittedly partially due to the camera itself, is not good enough for video. I cannot imagine this lens getting replaced/upgraded anytime soon, and it is sure not to drop in price much more than the already rock-bottom value. If you have a medium kit zoom and a long kit zoom lens, this latest STM version of the f/1.8 Nifty Fifty deserves a spot in your camera bag, and should definitely be on your camera when it comes to inexpensive but quality portraiture.

Rated 5 out of 5 byOadef from Fantastic LensI was initially skeptical about this because it was refurbished, but it works absolutely perfectly. It is a fantastic lens that should definitely be in any photographer's kit. The auto focus is fast and accurate and you can get some great low-light shots with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 byValerodrim from Did not work.I received this in the mail yesterday and it won’t work. Tried to use in two different camera bodies, but it won’t focus or take pictures. Keeps making a weird noise as soon as I put it in the camera. Will be returning it.
