Idle Standby is a licensing option for selected IBM connectivity products. IBM connectivity products deliver messaging and enterprise service bus (ESB) capabilities to support flexible integration with reliability, scalability, and high availability.

The Idle Standby option introduces affordable licensing for scenarios that support the software-based, high-availability capability enabled by the Multi-Instance Queue Manager feature that is delivered in WebSphere MQ. These scenarios are defined by standby instances when connectivity products are idling. This means they are not processing messages or other user data, but are running and are automatically activated in the event of failover by the Multi-Instance capability of the WebSphere MQ runtime.
